“THE SPIRITUALITY OF STRUGGLE” – A 3-part Series with Sr. Joan Chittister, O.S.B.
Biography:
Sr. Joan Chittister is a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Executive Director of BenetVision, a resource center for contemporary spirituality. She is a best-selling author, an internationally known lecturer, a champion for peace, and one of America’s towering spiritual voices.
How do we survive struggle? What happens to us spiritually as a result? The great secret of life is how to survive struggle without succumbing to it, how to bear struggle without being defeated by it, how to come out of great struggle better than when we found ourselves in the midst of it in the first place.
Part I – January 4, 2008 (Leader: Kathy Westbrook)
“We grow because we struggle,” the writer L. C. Allen said once. “We learn and we overcome.”… In part 1 Sr. Joan introduces us to the ways in which we struggle and where God is during our times of struggle.
Part II – January 11, 2008 (Leader: Kathy Westbrook)
“Hope,” the Greek poet Pindar, writes, “is the pillar that holds up the world and the world needs pillars so often.” The great interruptions of life-the great struggles-can leave us completely disoriented. In Part II Sr. Joan helps us to understand the place of God, and Faith, during our struggles.
Part III – January 18, 2008 (Leader: Kathy Westbrook)
“Whatever the struggle,” Diane Westlake writes, “we must continue the climb.” Struggle marks us in ways we don’t even realize…it leaves us wounded and chastened and different for the rest of our days. In part III of the series Sr. Joan shows how struggle changes and shapes the “elastic” of our beings so we are able to walk with others who struggle.

J2A is the heart of the program and follows Rite 13. After two years in Rite-13, young people move into the core program: Journey to Adulthood. In J2A leaders blend action and contemplation in teaching young people. The goals are simple; the task is complex and demanding. Young adults are given an opportunity to be confirmed. They are recognized as young adults, rather than children, and invited to make a holy pilgrimage.
Young Adults in the Church encourages older youth to take on adult responsibilities in all aspects of parish life. Guided by adult advisors, they use the Anglican model of Scripture, reason, and tradition of the Church to guide the lifelong pilgrimage in their faith.
